I am kinda excited to check out my first-ever Canopy Stay. This is a rather new brand added to the portfolio to offer an upscale and slightly more luxurious brand towards younger travellers. It has already been around for a couple of years. This is Hilton’s 12th brand. Most of the hotels under this brand are newly built. I love the concept and was glad to see it added to the brands. I would rank it slightly below a Hilton and above a DoubleTree. The biggest pull for me would be their modern design style. It is something like a luxury version of an Aloft. They have an orange theme which I love. I have heard plenty of this particular Canopy and the location is very central. It looks lovely from the website and I am hyped. It will be a fitting place for my last hotel in Croatia!

Booking Process & Pre Arrival

I booked directly with Hilton and got the Deluxe Room. I will be staying here for three nights. I did have a late arrival and early departure. Rates are affordable in Zagreb during Summer as everyone flocks out of the capital for the coastal cities. I got some information from the hotel before the directions and parking. The hotel parking is shared with the adjacent mall. You can simply keep the ticket when you enter and validate it at the hotel reception before leaving. Parking is offered at a special rate of 30 Euros for 24 hours. That is still very pricey. Do also note that it can get quite busy and we struggled to find a lot. About a couple of days out from my stay, I got an automated upgrade to the best suite on the property. This is excellent elite treatment and nice of the hotel. Canopy by Hilton Zagreb features 151 guest rooms and suites across 4 categories. You can check out the breakdown below.

Checking In

I got to the hotel at around 7.30pm after a 3-hour drive from Zadar. The hotel does not have a driveway and we had wanted to drop off our bags first but the traffic just made it impossible. We hold up the traffic sightly as we find the entrance to the parking. This is a hassle as there is no proper drop-off area on the side street. The parking was surprisingly very full and we struggled to find a lot. They did not have specific ones reserved for hotel guests. They did have a dedicated elevator straight to the Canopy lobby.

There was no bell service here. It looks the look of the lobby with the reception counters in the corner and the bar at the side. The decor is good with a modern look. I love those cute little orange bikes that guests can rent to explore the city. I was warmly welcomed by the staff and helped with checking in. Information on breakfast was provided and I was also thanked for being a Diamond member. It took quite a while since I had two separate back-to-back reservations. I was confirmed to be in their Premium Junior Suite.

Premium Junior Suite

I was assigned a suite on the third floor. I got Suite 307 to be exact. This is the best suite available in this hotel. Excellent treatment from the property. The suite is just a few steps away from the elevators. Immediately upon entering, you have a very spacious but short entranceway with the open-concept wardrobe immediately located to the right. I love the look of the suite, it felt trendy and modern. The finishing and colours felt lovely. The wardrobe comes with plenty of hangers and an ironing kit. There is also plenty of space for your luggage. You can find huge check-in bags over here. Additional amenities can be found in the drawers below.

On the left, you have a coat hanger and a full-length mirror. This will be a good spot to check out your fit before heading out.

The bathroom is a nice spot. I love the look here with the black-and-white design. The bathroom comes with an elongated layout with the toilet near the entrance and the standing shower in the middle. Heading in, you have the sink and the bathtub. There are plenty of counter space.

The toiletries are from thankyou, an Australian social enterprise botanical brand in large pump-size bottles. I love the citrus-refreshing scent of them. Given that this is my first Canopy stay, I am not sure if this is their standard brand. They are generous with them with one set in the bathtub and another set in the standing shower.

The standing shower makes you feel like you are in a glass box. Water pressure and temperature control are excellent. It comes with both a handheld shower head and a rainforest one. Full marks on this aspect.

Back in the living room, you have the minibar set up in a slim cabinet. It is fully equipped with a kettle, a coffee machine and a fridge that is left empty for your use. Drinking water is not provided but you have to get filtered water from the water station located on the second and the fourth level. I did feel that if they want to go with this concept, they should provide the water dispenser on every level. There is a welcome amenity here consisting of a personalised note, two local craft beers, a bottle of water and some fruits.

The living room comes with a spacious couch and a side chair. This will be good for 3 to 4 pax and it surrounds a coffee table. It will be a very nice space to lounge and hang out with your travelling group.

The huge high-quality smart screen television is mounted on the side with the setup up also acts as a barrier between the bedroom and living area. The TV comes with a good number of both local and international cable TV channels.  The TV is of a very good size for the living room. I love the set-up over here with the racks and the industrial look.

There isn’t much of a view from the suite given that it simply just faces the street opposite. We are also not that high up. Curtains and sheers are manually controlled and they are very good in blocking out lights. This is very handy as during this time, it gets bright at 5ish. I love the bedroom area. The finishes look so chic and cosy. The pillar of the building is also nicely incorporated into the layout and design of the place itself. Right smack in the middle, you have the large comfortable king-size bed.

I love that it is on the firmer side. The sheets and mattress were high quality. The finishing is top notch with the texture addicting so much vibes to the place on the headboard. Flanking both sides of the bed, you can find power outlets and controls for the lighting. They also have a USB charger port which will certainly come in handy for international travellers. I slept so well and got a fresh start to my time in Zagreb daily.

On the other side of the wall, you can find the working desk. It is a good size and comes with all sorts of ports. The Wi-Fi connection is very strong and works very well in the suite. This will be nice to set up for work if you need to get something done. I love the little quirks in the room here with the books. Left on the desk is a reusable tumbler to store water.

There is another television in the bedroom which is hung from the ceiling. This set-up adds a lot of flair to the place. It makes it a really good setup for a movie night. The television is high-quality and comes with a good number of both local and international cable TV channels. You can also cast content from your phone.

Fitness Center

The gym is open 24 hours and located in the basement. It is not a rather spacious space but comes with the usual equipment that you might need for a basic workout session. There are some weights, treadmills, bikes and step machines. Water and towels are provided. Simple but gets the work done.

Transfer Lounge

This property comes with a Transfer Lounge. It is open to all guests. This is a rather unique facility and amenity to have. It comes with lockers and shower facilities. Guests can use it while waiting for their room or after checkout. It is a very useful amenity. I do feel that it can be further refined.  They could have put in some day beds, TVs or game machines. That will be even more amazing.

Evening Tasting

A signature of the property. Lovely for them to extend this to all guests. I was rather intrigued by this concept since it is rather interesting. I was wondering if this is a Canopy signature. I am looking forward to checking it out. I was expecting it something to be like a drinks hour for members. Something like the wine hour in Andaz. This is served in the restaurant and only from Thu to Sat, 5pm to 7pm. It is rather weird that it is not done in the bar but at the restaurant.

I only managed to check it out once despite staying here for 3 nights since I had a late arrival and was out in Pula the next day. It was a life-changing experience! You are not missing anything either. I was invited to take any seat at the restaurant and offered a canape. The staff then came over to provide you with a tasting. You have a choice between red or white. Despite the event name, I was expecting a minimum of a glass of wine! It turns out to be a tasting portion! I should hope things aren’t right when no one is coming for this! The pour is way too small and stingy with how affordable wines are here! Yet, they can’t even offer this daily! What a half-hearted offering! They should have stuck with one drink voucher per Diamond member!

Breakfast at Restaurant ReUnion

Breakfast is served at the hotel’s main restaurant ReUnion! This is located just off the lobby area. Breakfast is served from 7am to 10am on weekdays and till 10.30am on the weekends. I do feel that the timing is slightly early. Breakfast is included for Gold and Diamond members. Breakfast is served buffet style. It is quite an intimate selection. I was down for breakfast in the morning and it was packed. It wasn’t a huge restaurant to begin with. I was ushered to a seat and hot drinks orders were taken.

The buffet line wasn’t huge! You can find the usual items such as juices, cheese, cold cuts, pastries, western items and eggs. You can order eggs cooked to your liking. I will let the pictures do the rest of the speaking. They can also provide a breakfast box for my early departure.

Conclusion

One of the newer Hilton hotels in the area and definitely in Croatia. It is a very lovely property with a fantastic location to explore the old city. You can walk to most places and public transport is very affordable here too. I enjoyed my first-ever Canopy stay! I love the modern and playful vibes with the orange finishes. It is also nice that most of their properties are newer too. The do can improve on the water dispenser, driveway, parking and breakfast. The evening tasting and transfer lounge are nice concepts but half-hearted! You will be happy with this property! The rates are always very affordable. I appreciated them upgrading me to this lovely suite. This sort of brings up an end to my time in Croatia! Time to make my way back to Singapore!
