From Airport / Train Station to the City

Although most tourists will be arriving via train instead the Salzburg Airport is about 20 minutes away from the city and a bus connects them. The tickets cost 2.50 Euro.

The Hauptbahnhof, is located to the north of the Salzach River within the New Town of Salzburg. From there you can connect via the bus service to different part of town. A ticket bought on the bus is €2.60, a single short trip ticket €1.30 (maximum 3 stops), a 24 h ticket €5.70. If not many sites are within a stroll away.

Attractions

Schloss Hellbrunn

Known as the summer palace for the archbishops of Salzburg, the place is full of fountains and pretty gardens. There is also a playful nature with all the trick fountains. Expect to get wet. It is open in the winter months from 9am to 4.30pm. Slightly later in the summer months. Tickets cost 12.50 for adults or 8 Euro for students. The place is reachable via bus 25 from the main station.

Getreidegasse

A Street along the main city square that is famous for its traditional shops and their iconic signs displayed outside. It is also known as Grain Lane. This place is unique and have prices similarly to match.

Hohensalzburg Fortress

Located on top of a hill in the nearby vicinity of Salzburg, it offers breath taking views of the city to the Alps. It is also the largest fortress in the world and extremely well preserved. It can be reached via a walk or the railway services. Inside the fortress, there are exhibition showing the life there and weapons, including torture instruments. The fortress is open from 9am till 5pm. Tickets can be bought online and is cheaper.

Alter Markt Square

The old market square in the centre of the historic city. Bustling since the 13th century, previously the square is known as the Ludwig Victor Square. With the St Florian Fountain in the middle of the square, enjoy the vibes, the numerous shops. Sometimes there will be markets and fairs housed here too.

Mozarts Geburtshaus

The most famous person of the city house. This place is the Mozart Birth House, after being famous, people have turn this family house into a museum. The family live here in the 1747 to 1773 where Mozart himself was born here too. The house have a recognised yellow façade. It is open daily from 9am to 5.30pm. Tickets cost 8.50 Euro for reduced.

Schloss Mirabell

Also known as the Mirabell Palace, the palace was completed in the 17th century, with opulent decoration and also a well maintained gorgeous gardens. It is located along the Salzach River. Some of the must check out place includes the Garden of Dawrf, Garden of Roses and also the most beautiful wedding hall in the world, Marble Hall. The place are free to access.

Dom zu Salzburg

The Salzburg cathedral right smack in the middle of the city. It is an important piece and example of architecture in the city. It is of example of a 17th century construction in a baroque style.

St. Peter’s Abbey

A Benedictine monastery, this place has been here since more than a thousand year ago. The interior of this abbey is extremely mystic and the vibes will certainly be felt if you are there. Take a step inside and have a look.

The Untersberg

Part of the mountain range between Germany and Austria. The popularity increases since it is within striking distance of Salzburg. From hiking to the cable car, there is a wide range of alternatives to reach this place. At the top you will be able to see the gorgeous Salzburg Lake as well as the surrounding snow-capped mountains. The opening hours depend on the season with the earliest being 9am to 4pm. The tickets for the cable car cost roughly around 10 Euros. The Valley Station can be reached from bus station Lastenstraße with line 21 or 35.

Kapuzinerberg

A hill right in the city on the east side of the river. This makes it ideal for a hike or exercise or those who are trying to get a view of the city without travelling far. The views of the city, and the Alps, are spectacular and the air is fresh too. It is roughly a 30min to 45 min walk or hike from the middle of the city. The walk will certainly leave you charmed.

They serve traditional and authentic food. The chicken and schnitzel is said to be one of the best. The beer is also awesome, which they get from the nearby beer hall. They are open daily from 11am to 11pm.

Wilder Mann

Large portion and affordable price. Located in a hidden alley they provide both indoor seating and also alfresco ones too. Open daily from 11am to 9pm except Sunday.

Café Tomaselli

Alter Markt 9, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

A great café to be at, it is located right in the middle of the Alter Markt. Also known as Mozart favourite coffeehouse it is as well the oldest one in Salzburg. Try one of their homemade cakes and also choose from the great variety of coffee. The recommendation is the Einspänner Coffee. It is open from 7am to 7pm from Mon to Sat and from 8am on Sun.

Cafe Konditorei Fürst

This café is famous for their pastries, which is exquisite and tasty. It is also the birthplace of the well-known Mozartkugel pastry invented here in 1884.

Anifer Mühlenbrot

Located on the other side of the river, it is located in close vicinity to the Schloss Mirabell. This isn’t really a café but a small bakery with delicious sweets and pastries. Their breakfasts are awesome and you got to try their Berger Chocolate too.

Cafe Würfel Zucker

Well known for their apple strudel, it is a must try in town. The quaint café is located along the banks of the river. It is open from 9am till 6pm.
