I am always intrigued by the Curio Collection. Where they are mostly independent hotels with their unique flair but under a management contract with Hiltons. Something like a chain but without the identical identity. Similar brands would be like Marriott Autograph. Then lean more towards SLH style. Previously I had stayed at The Renwick in NYC and was delighted. It is with no doubt that the Reichshof would be another highlight! Each property have their own history and feature. While I love hiltons and conrads it tend to get boring since chains like to keep the style similar! While when you are talking about the Curio Collection, they are significantly unique and yet they give you the same elite benefits as what you will get for example for staying in a Conrad or Hilton. I get points, upgrades as well as complimentary breakfast as a gold members as well. Perhaps the only bad side is there is rarely a lounge. To make it a point, I will go my way out for Curio collections properties. Let me show you how nice the Reichshof is!
From a view point of Hamburg, the location can’t gets any better, it is located right opposite the central train station and perhaps literally steps away from the Alster Lake. As mentioned, each curio collection property perhaps have it’s own story behind them. the Reichshof Hamburg was built and open in 1910 as a traditional hamburger hotel. At the opening in 1910 it was one of the largest hotels in Europe and at that time was the largest hotel in Germany. The building was even partially destroyed in the world wars. It is extensively renovated in 2015 and open since under the Curio Collection. Now you can get the blend of the old and the new. I was there for 2 nights and the rates for my stay was around 116 Euros a night.
While Curio collections tends to lean towards the stongy side when it comes to upgrades, you still get the full package of benefits from hilton over here. Free breakfast and all. Which is nice! Furthermore the ability to earn or redeem points for a unique property. I was super lucky to be in Hamburg on the hottest day in Europe ever and after enduring a close to 40 degrees with no air conditioning flixtrain which I have shared about earlier, boy I was glad to be finally checking in the nice cold lobby. The lady checking me in was a gem, we both shrug off the disaster weather. Summer in Hamburg should be a cool 28 Degrees max! I was thank for a gold member as well. Check in was fast and there is no wait. I was upgraded to a King Large Room, a one level upgrade.
My room is located in the corner near the lift on the second floor and it was rather huge and spacious. Much bigger than expected. I love the decor and decoration of the room and was impressive upon entering. The usage of the dark brown and caramel colours felt engaging to me. The room is basically squarish in size, immediately after entering the wardrobe and the mini bar set up is right on the right. Here you can find lots of storage and the most of the amenity. You can find an ironing set, umbrella, bathrobes as well as slippers and shoehorn. The slippers were of super good quality and definitely the best that I have seen in all my hotel stays. They were more like flip flops. There is also a safe here. Bottles of water are also provided here and you can also find a pod coffee machine also. However it is weird that there is no fridge! The set up looks very chic!
Then almost right opposite the entrance is a little lazing area. It is by the window and the tv and working desk area. I love the concept where you can do some reading, wear your shoes or even just to place your baggage. However it would be better if there is some kind of a view out of the window!
The bed is located towards the left of the room, where you can find a huge lush actual king size bed with lots of pillow. I love how luxurious the bed felt and it was firm and comfy at the same time. The pillow was also not paper thin as well. Hitting all my points with respect to bedding. However a point was lacking in terms of the blanket which is 2 separate single one instead of an actual king size duvet. Perhaps they are just getting all single blankets to streamline the housekeeping work since in Europe some of the double beds are actually form by just placing 2 single beds side by side! On the other hand, the bed is one of the most comfy one I ever had. I love that they have outlets placed near the bed and wifi was strong as well!
The TV faces the bed and is of a good quality, it is also huge. Underneath the TV is also a proper working desk in the room. You can find outlets over here as well as a tablet to inform you of all the offerings in the hotel. I love how bright the room is! On the desk there is also an amenity placed consisting of some local honey with a welcome note!
The Bathroom is located on the right next to the wardrobe. It is spacious and gleaming. I love the finishing and the usage of black marble, glass as well as warm lighting. Bathroom amenities were provided by The White Company which was very nice.
Notwithstanding, you can also find dispenser size soaps in the toilet they were of the hotel brand but good as well. The showering area was spacious and it comes with rainforest shower. The water pressure was alright but not good. Well temperature control, given the timing, I literally just showered with cold water all day long.
Perks of being a Hilton gold member includes complimentary breakfast and it is nice to see that Reichshof extends the full buffet offering and not being a cookie cutter. Breakfast is served from 6.30 to 10.30 am on weekdays and 7am to 12pm on weekends in the Stadt Restaurant. I have to commend the generous timings. The buffet breakfast pride on being based on regional and seasonally organic produce costing 23 euros normally. Another reason why gold status is so beneficial.
The restaurant is gorgeous and I was up early, which it stayed rather empty given the timing. The buffet spread was huge and everything looks fresh and delicious. I am really looking forward to trying everything! I also do have to say that the staff was on point as well. The lady made me an excellent cup of cappuccino, the perfect espresso machine frothy kind and double espresso as well. She even remember my drinks choice the next day. Let me just point out that this is one of the best hotel breakfast I have had in a while and I have been having a lot in Europe for the past few months!
There was a good healthy selection, drink wise, besides coffee you can also find some artisan teas and juices. There are 4 different kind of juice, blackcurrant, OJ, apple and multivitamins. Everything is nicely displayed as well. It is a sign that breakfast would be an indulgence when you have sparkling wine on offer as well!
There was a huge selection in the carbs category, from croissants to numerous types of rolls. After all this is Germany. It is said that they purchase it from a local bakery, Pritsch right here in Hamburg. You can also find lots of homemade jams, honey and nutella to go along.
On the hot dishes, you can find a selection of mushrooms, baked tomato, fried potatoes, pancakes and many more. As well as the usual bacon and scrambled eggs. In addition there is also an egg station where the chefs could whip up anything you want, I tried some omelets, poached eggs and they were always perfectly executed.
I especially love the fried potatoes which is flavourful and had lots of onions. Then we also have some beef balls and sausages. What more do you need to say about German sausages! The sausages and cold cuts are another highlight of the breakfast. You can also find cured fish and smoked salmon. The assortments of cheese, ham and salami are all from the region. Yummy!
Fruits wise it’s impressive too! Numerous types of fresh fruits from apples, peach to watermelon. There is even cut Kiwi! Omg! Totally gonna Dove in it! Well I can’t state how useful my gold status is! This breakfast is at least worth 15-20 euros in my opinion. Even if you are not staying here or for the locals, this is a place that I will recommend to come just for a lazy brunch or breakfast! I do note that there is no change in breakfast selection. Breakfast is a treat constantly.
Reichshof is a perfect hotel in my opinion for Hamburg. The price point as well as the central location I will recommend it anyday for both business travellers as well as for leisure. I enjoyed my stay here. I will even give it as a solid 4.5 star hotel. It would have been a perfect 5 without the slight issues on the staff. I ask for ice and more water once and it is not brought up despite the staff noting on the request. After that another staff say they can’t send up since room service only open at 6pm. Weird and lazy in my opinion. The room was also rather warm but I will probably note that the airconditioning is overcompensating right smack in the heatwave. Let me know how your stay here was!
