I was actually kind of excited for this? After hearing and knowing about this product for years, I am glad to try it out. I always wanted to give it a try and perhaps review it, but couldn’t bear to splurge on the premium. It is always all out or full budget for me. I had originally paid around 643 HKD for my flight. I got an upgrade offer via email a couple of days out from my flight for 465 HKD to upgrade to Scoot Plus, which includes meals, seat selection and even baggage. It seems like quite a fair amount for this flight duration. Do note that once you take up the upgrade, you lose any existing add-ons that you bought. You don’t get a refund for any add-ons. This brings up my total cost of this flight to 1108 HKD for this one-way ScootPlus ticket. I am quite excited to see what Scootplus will be like. This is my first time. I would believe that it is quite similar to the US Domestic First Class. Is this really business class? It will also allow me to answer this question: Would you rather go for SQ economy or ScootPlus if the price is similar?

Checking In

I got to Hong Kong airport at about 5pm or so. It was a pretty easy ride. I prefer taking a cab to either HK or Kowloon Station before taking the train. This is my preferred way. It also offers a nice balance with cost. I didn’t come earlier since my mum was taking a later flight on Cathay. It will be too early. Scoot uses check-in counters E, and it was straight ahead after exiting the airport express. I can use the priority lines on account of my KF status, as well as holding a Scootplus ticket. I was immediately helped by a friendly guy and got the boarding pass. In contrast, my mum, who was flying with Cathay, took an even longer time.

Boarding Process

Boarding is scheduled for 6.35pm. Weirdly, the gate is not even assigned at the point of checking in. I spend my time at the amazing Kyra Lounge. Boarding will definitely be delayed since the plane only got to the gate at about 6.40pm. We were invited to line up at 6.45pm, and boarding started at 6.55pm, with those having Board Me First and Scootplus invited to board first. I was welcomed by the crew and then went on to get some nice pictures of the cabin. Scootplus is located in the front.

While on the ground, the crew came over to introduce themselves, and also to take meal and drinks orders. He also provided a welcome drink, which was some water. Water is unlimited in ScootPlus, and you can always request more throughout the flight. This is an awesome one. We ended up being delayed for quite some time because we had missed our departure slot and then had to wait very long in line for departure. I also heard their announcement that they are selling upgrades onboard for 78 SGD and 52 SGD for extra legroom stretch seats. My upgrade seems like an awesome deal now!

Scoot 787 Scoot Plus Cabin

The Scootplus cabin is in a 2-3-2 configuration. This is only found on their 787 fleet. The rest of the planes will have only one cabin. This makes for a total of 35 seats over 5 rows. The cabin was pretty empty and only about 20% full! I assigned myself 3K on the right side of the website.

Let me give you an introduction to the seats by themselves. The cabin comes with plush leather seats. It is slightly dated and under-maintained. The seats are definitely showing their age. As mentioned on their website, the seats measure 18.5″-19.5″ wide with 38″ seat pitch and recline. I would wish for them to provide a pillow. That will elevate the experience. The best seats here are definitely in the bulkhead. Row 1 will boost additional leg space and make it more comfortable.

The seats come with a legrest that you can control with a lever on the side. The other one controls the recline. The table comes out from the middle of the armrest. There is also a very nice platform here that you can use to place some small and loose items. Power outlets can be found in the middle, and there is one plug for each passenger. ScootPlus passengers enjoy complimentary power outlet access.

After levelling off, the crew came by to issue a Wi-Fi access card. This comes with 30MB to use. The connection wasn’t very good, and it was barely usable. I got disconnected in 5 mins and couldn’t log in after. I also felt like they should be more generous with it. True enough, from November 2025, ScootPlus passengers will receive a 200 MB allowance instead. That should be great for some text and social media.

Meal Service

The service was decent and friendly enough. The upgrade includes a hot meal and a drink on board. This is worth 15 SGD or so. The crew took orders while on the ground. You can choose any non-alcoholic drink. The meals and drinks will be served right after take off, with everything on a tray. This also comes with some packaged cookies as desserts. I opted for the Nasi Lemak and coconut water.

The food was so bad, I am not even sure how they can get microwaved food that is full of seasoning and preservatives so badly done. I am not expecting a lot. I mean, I am sure that they are making a pretty hefty profit margin on this. Come on, we can do better than this. Just some frozen pizza or CP wanton bowl from the supermarket will be better. I shall not describe the meal anymore. 20-cent coin-sized chicken? Don’t upgrade for the meals!

Singapore Airlines Economy or ScootPlus?

Scoot Plus or SQ economy? That is the golden question. After trying this product, I have come to this conclusion. This is what I will say for a short regional flight. If the pricing between Scootplus and SQ economy is the same, I will go for Scootplus. The hardware is still much more comfortable than an economy seat. I do not need a meal for flights to HK or BKK. IFE is a bonus for me and not necessary. I would appreciate it if the Wi-Fi were as good as SQ. For longer flights where I want to watch a movie, enjoy my unlimited Wi-Fi, and have better drinks and food options, I will go for Singapore Airlines Economy Class.

Conclusion

Is it the same as Business Class? Definitely not! Would I book this again? If the price is right, sure! Or if I get a good upgrade deal like this. The seats are alright and very similar to US Domestic First Class. Service is friendly and warm. They are definitely not as polished or poised as their SQ counterparts. If you can, definitely choose the first row, which will provide much more legroom. I would love it if they could improve the Wi-Fi connection and provide a pillow. The meal quality must be improved, or I just chose the wrong meal.
