This is my main focus for this trip which is to check out the SilverKris Lounge in Hong Kong. It probably be my very last time in this lounge on an economy ticket. I am sure I can get the opportunity to do so with a premium-class ticket in the future. I wanted to check out another outstation SKL when I have a chance to do so. It is one of the more recent SKL that reopens after COVID. I didn’t manage to check it out the last time I flew out of HKG. It is one of the lounges to be renovated under the “Home Away From Home” concept. This is also one of the 4 SKL in the world that comes with a First Class section. It is nice that SQ operates their lounge here given the demand. There is also no good alternative since HKG is mainly an Oneworld Hub. Perhaps, they could have worked out an arrangement for The Wing and The Pier. This would be the 7th SilverKris Lounge that I have visited out of the 11 locations in the network. You can check out my review of the Seoul and Bangkok lounges here. They are my favourite.

Access Requirements

The Hong Kong SilverKris Lounge is open daily from 6am to 12am. The first class section closes slightly earlier at 11.30pm. This virtually covers all SQ departures. If you are departing around the same time as an SQ flight, you can access it. This is subject to changes, depending on SQ flight schedules. This is a standard Star Alliance Lounge. Currently, all Star Alliance premium cabin customers, KrisFlyer Elite Gold, PPS Club and Star Alliance Status holders are allowed access to the lounge. Typical access rules for guests follow. I got access on account of my KrisFlyer Gold status.

Arrival & Location

The location is located near Gate 5 on the main departure floor. I did had quite a hard time finding it at first and there wasn’t much signage. Simply make your way towards the gate side and you will then be able to spot it. Usually, SQ will use one of the gate near the lounge as well. My particular flight was assigned gate 6.

Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge Hong Kong

Immediately after entering the lounge, you can find an overflow area to the right. This place is empty! I wouldn’t recommend sitting here unless the lounge is full to the brim. You should be using the main space of the lounge over here.

There was then a long corridor that led you into the main space of the lounge. Towards the left is the First Class section which is only open for Suites / First Class Passengers as well as PPS Solitaire members. Along the corridor, you can find the bathroom and showers. I took a look at the bathroom which was nothing memorable but it was well maintained by the staff.

The main space of the lounge is a long room that is segregated into the dining area in the first part of the lounge and then the lounge area filling up the rest of the room. Let me come back to the refreshment later on. Here you can find typical dining tables in groups of 2 or 4. This will be much more suitable for dining. Power outlets are available on some of the seatings by the side.

The lounging area consists of typical couches arranged in groups. The seats are pretty comfortable and there are power sockets nearby for guests usage. Wifi is also available in the lounge. Some of these solo cubicles are great for solo travellers with them being suitable for working and dining. Most of these are in line with the SQ lounge image. I did find the place rather gloomy and dated with no natural light.

I have to say that this is one of the more disappointing SilverKris Lounge that I have been to outstation after COVID. The place is gloomy and uninviting. Nothing seems to have changed since the renovation or the downtime. This seems like a wasted opportunity.

Food and Drinks

The main refreshment counter is found in the front of the lounge. Everything is served buffet style with two ala carte items that you can order from the staff. The lounge also comes with a bar. You can check out the menu for the drinks over here. I do remember it being quite a highlight years ago. It seems that now they have removed Champagne from the menu and only offer a prosecco. That is very disappointing

I also tried some of their cocktails including the Mojito and the Moscow Mule, it was uninviting. Self Served drinks are found in the fridge.

The buffet counter do boosts quite a nice selection of food. You have some pasta, grilled pork, soups, vegetables, chicken, dim sum, fried food, satays, wraps, fruits. There are also some sweet soups, tofu pudding and Haagen-Dazs ice cream. They were unmemorable.

You can also order Laksa and Wanton Noodles from the staff. These were pretty decent.

Conclusion

To be very frank, this is a rather disappointing lounge. I expected a lot more from this lounge. SilverKris Lounge are usually pretty good and I have great experience in their Seoul and Bangkok lounges. This lounge suffers from a bad location, decor and subpar food. Even the drinks have been downgraded. Champagne used to be a norm in SKL and I remember they serving Piper Heidsieck. This is not one of the lounges that you should come early for. They should have a better offering for all Star Alliance passengers and HKG is also one of the more premium markets of Singapore Airlines. Perhaps the good stuff is in the First Class sections. This would be the 7th SilverKris Lounge that I have visited out of the 11 locations in the network.
