Back in February, I took a quick weekend getaway to Guangzhou. This is more of a mileage run for me as I need to clock some elite miles to get my KrisFlyer Gold Status. A while back, SQ were running a sale and I managed to get tickets to Guangzhou for around 330 SGD. That was quite a deal considering that it will earn me around 4000 Elite Miles which will nicely bring me over to the KrisFlyer Gold tier. I have not been to Guangzhou and it’s been ages since I visited China. I took the opportunity to check out another part of China’s DNA and add it to my list. Furthermore, I have always heard many good things about Guangzhou and how it is the food paradise of the city. This would be great to get some of those Southern delicacies. Planning a trip to China is not easy, this is especially true as there is limited information on what we can find on the web outside of China. Here is a slight sharing of what I did in Guangzhou.
Transportation in Guangzhou
Public transportation in Guangzhou is extensive and affordable. They have a good metro network but sadly, I do not have any relevant information to share on this as I mainly rely on Didi, the China and Singapore equivalent of Uber and Grab. It is super affordable and reliable. This is especially true since we are in a group of 4. The coverage is extensive and it is very easy to get a ride. Do set up the app prior and add all the payment methods. You can also link it to Alipay. It cost around 20 to 30 SGD to get to the airport and we never spent more than 10 SGD for rides around the city centre. After some time, we even got Didi Premier as the cars are cleaner. It is not too much of a premium above the usual.

Conclusion
I had a fun time in Guangzhou. It is kind of similar to Hong Kong but more authentic. It is also much more chill and cheaper. It is a good choice or alternative to Hong Kong. The food is really good and you will probably spend less than a trip to HK. I got lucky with the weather and it was amazing to explore the city with the cold wave. Guangzhou is perfect for a short getaway. It will be nice for 3 nights or so.
