Margaret River is the highlight of my trip to Western Australia. It is one of the main reasons for my trip to Perth. I wanted to check out some of the wineries in Margaret River. The most well-known winery region in Western Australia and one of the most prominent ones in Australia. Margaret River is a huge area. It stretches from the area extending from Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin. It is about a 3-hour drive south of Perth. I visited several towns and cities along the way. Let me share my trip to Margaret River. I had one of the best experiences in Vasse Felix!
Vasse Felix Winery
Vasse Felix is one of the top wineries in the region. It is located in the heart of the Margaret River region and the drive here is very easy. It is located together with numerous wineries in the area. As we drive in, you are greeted by pictures of vineyards. When visiting wineries in the Southern Hemisphere, do take note that the season is on the opposite side.
The landscape here was amazing as we pulled up to Vasse Felix. We started the tour with an introduction to the winery before a walk of the grounds. I love how tours are conducted here.
We started with a glass of bubbles. This should be the standard operating procedure of all wineries. The Idée Fixe Premier Brut Blanc de Blancs was impressive.
As we walked through the grounds we had an introduction to the history of the winery and also how it started. We also got a chance to visit the Vault where there is a collection of Vasse Felix wines. The first vintage was back in 1971. Sadly, the harvest was a disaster due to bunch-rot and silver-eyes (native birds). As such, 1972 was the proper release and I got a look at the bottle.
The winery today owns more than 300 ha of vineyards in the Margaret River Region. They modelled after Bordeaux and Burgundy. They now produce around 1.2m bottles a year.
We then head back for a tasting. We tried 3 of their signature Chardonnay before moving on to the Cabernet. My favourite out of all of them is the 2022 Filius Chardonnay and the 2019 Tom Cullity!
I had a really fun time over here and love having the walking tour around the winery with a glass of bubbles. Highly recommend it if you are in this area.

Conclusion
I enjoyed my time over in Margaret River. It is a pristine place in Australia and the natural landscape here is gorgeous. My only complaints would be the slightly warm weather and the annoying flies. They took away a huge share of my amazing experience. I must have swatted more flies over here in 3 days than my entire life. Vasse Felix is amazing and I had an amazing time over there visiting the vineyard. The wines are amazing. Do not miss it if you are in this area. The meals over here are also very good with great seafood!
