Starting the road trip right, the day of our drive will take us from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo. This is one of the main spots that you will have to check out in the south island. This is one of the main tourist attractions. After that, I will continue heading south and drive to Mt Cook as well as Wanaka before driving into Queenstown. This post will cover the places that I visit in these areas. In addition to this, do check out my post on the helicopter tour at Mt Cook. That is amazing.

South Island Road Trip – Lake Tekapo
Heading into Lake Tekapo

Motuariki View Point

Mt John Observatory Point! Do note that to drive up here you will need to pay a small entrance fee! Despite the 8 NZD cost, it is worth it! The views are excellent up there

Check out the cute little cafe here! The view is impeccable!

Lake Tekapo

The Church of Good Shepherd

Since we stayed at the Peppers Bluewater Resort Lake Tekapo where we had our Kitchenette. We got some ingredients from the supermarket and cook our dinner.

Lake Tekapo is one of the best spots in the world for stargazing. It is part of the International Dark Sky Reserve! Sadly during the time I am here, it was very cloudy and I did not get to see the stars. This is one of my biggest regrets!

Lake Pukaki

Peter’s Lookout

On Mt Cook Road

Glentanner

Hooker Valley

High Country Salmon! We stop by here for a quick lunch! The salmon dishes are very good!

Lindis Pass

Rippon Vineyard! Super gorgeous vineyard by the lake and on a sloppy hill

Lake Wanaka

Patagonia Chocolates! One of the best ice creams I had. It is super affordable and the portion is huge.

Conclusion
Doing a road trip in NZ South Island will make you squeal and wow at every corner. The majestic views and jaw-dropping untouched nature makes this one of your must visit during your lifetime. Do remember to check out my post sharing on the helicopter tour that I did in Mt Cook. That is hands down one of the best travel experiences I had on the road. I really love the scenery around Lake Tekapo and Mt Cook. Wanaka is a little boring for me but Rippon Winery is one of my favourites and super gorgeous. The setting by the lake and on the hills is very idyllic. Do remember to book early if you want a visit. Next up, I will be sharing my road trip and the places that I visited around Queenstown.
